Strong communities don’t happen by accident. They’re built through everyday choices, meaningful connections, and a shared commitment to supporting one another. At Carter Notary, supporting local businesses and organizations is more than a value; it’s a way of contributing to the long-term strength and resilience of our community.
That belief is at the heart of Think Local First (TLF). And it’s one that Beverly Carter, founder and owner of Carter Notary, has proudly supported for more than a decade. This marks an exciting new chapter as Beverly has stepped into her role as President of Think Local First, bringing her passion for community, leadership, and the motto—Momentum—to the forefront.
Leading by Example
For Beverly, supporting local isn’t just a message. It’s a way of doing business and living in the community.
At Carter Notary, local support shows up in meaningful ways. Beverly intentionally purchases products, services, and experiences from local businesses to gift to Carter Notary clients. She also uses her platform, which reaches thousands of readers, to spotlight fellow Think Local First members and amplify the stories of independent businesses across Greater Victoria.
“The timing is right to build real momentum behind Think Local First’s long-time message,” Beverly says. “Not only shopping locally, but supporting local businesses and organizations more broadly. We can all do a small part to strengthen our economy.”
What is Think Local First?
Think Local First is a non-profit society made up of passionate volunteers, each a small business owner or representative, who believe in the power of local. The organization champions independent businesses and helps consumers understand the ripple effect created when they choose local.
From keeping money circulating within our economy to sustaining the vibrant shops, services, and experiences that define Greater Victoria, the message is simple and powerful: when you support local, we all thrive.
With more than 150 members across the region, Think Local First is more than a network. It’s a movement connecting businesses, organizations, and the community that makes it all possible.
How Supporting Local Benefits Everyone
Supporting local businesses goes far beyond a single purchase. It creates a ripple effect that touches every part of our community.
It strengthens the local economy.
When you spend money at a locally owned business, more of those dollars stay right here—supporting jobs, local suppliers, and community services. This creates a healthier, more resilient economy that benefits everyone.
It creates jobs and opportunity.
Local businesses are major employers and often provide first jobs, flexible work, and long-term careers. A thriving local business community means more opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds.
It builds stronger relationships and trust.
Local businesses are owned by people who live here, raise families here, and care deeply about the community. Supporting them fosters connection, accountability, and a sense of belonging you don’t get from big-box or online-only retailers.
It keeps our community vibrant and unique.
Independent businesses shape the character of Greater Victoria, from the cafés we gather in, to the professional services we rely on. Supporting local helps preserve the diversity, creativity, and personality that make our region special.
It supports community giving.
Local businesses are often the first to sponsor events, donate to fundraisers, and volunteer their time. When they succeed, the whole community benefits through increased support for local causes and initiatives.
