Reflections from a Think Local First Breakfast
By Beverly Carter, Notary Public & President Think Local First Society in Victoria, BC
Strong communities are built on strong relationships. As a Notary Public serving Greater Victoria, I have the privilege of working with individuals, families, and business owners during some of their most important life decisions—including real estate transactions, wills, powers of attorney, estate planning, and notarized legal documents.
Because of this work, I understand how important it is to have a trusted network of local professionals and small businesses supporting one another. That’s why I’m proud to serve as President of Think Local First Greater Victoria, an organization dedicated to strengthening our local economy in Victoria, BC by encouraging people to support independent businesses and locally rooted community organizations.
Recently, we gathered for another Think Local First Member Breakfast, and it was a wonderful reminder of the value of community connection, local entrepreneurship, and knowledge-sharing.

Why Local Business Networking Matters in Victoria, BC
Victoria has a vibrant community of small businesses, entrepreneurs, professional service providers and non-profit organizations. Simple networking events like the Think Local First breakfast meetings create opportunities for business owners and non-profit organization leaders to build authentic relationships and share insights that benefit the entire community.
During this recent breakfast, each attendee shared a personal or professional win, which sparked some fascinating discussions about business growth, leadership, and innovation.
Events like these are one of the reasons Greater Victoria continues to thrive as a hub for small business success.

Busting Myths About Insurance and Financial Protection
One of the most eye-opening conversations came from financial wealth and insurance advisor Jane Handforth. Many people believe that if they have a health condition, they cannot qualify for life insurance, disability insurance, or critical illness insurance. However, that’s not always true.
In many cases, there are insurance options available for individuals with pre-existing conditions, and speaking with a knowledgeable advisor can make a significant difference.
For individuals planning their financial future, particularly when preparing wills, estate plans, or family asset protection strategies, understanding insurance options can be an important part of long-term planning.
Ethical and Sustainable Retail in Greater Victoria
Another great conversation came from Mel Lingerie and Adventure Clothing, two respected local retailers in Victoria. They shared insights into how clothing manufacturers are evaluated based on:
- Fabric quality
- Chemical use in production
- Environmental sustainability
- Ethical labour practices
Both businesses are committed to offering ethically sourced clothing made with high-quality materials, which often means garments last longer and reduce environmental impact. Supporting businesses that prioritize ethical manufacturing and sustainability helps strengthen Victoria’s reputation as a community that values responsible commerce.
Leadership and Creativity in Victoria’s Marketing Community
Local leadership was also on display through Kathryn Pascuzzo of Swank Creative. Kathryn is organizing an upcoming event that will bring together 50 women in marketing and creative industries in Victoria. The event is designed to encourage:
- Collaboration
- Creative thinking
- Professional development
- Networking among marketing professionals
Initiatives like this contribute to the continued growth of Victoria’s creative economy.
Supporting Safety for Downtown Victoria Businesses
Another important topic discussed at breakfast was downtown business safety. Rene from Themis Security Services Ltd. shared how their company supports businesses in the downtown Victoria core.
Many small businesses do not require full-time security services, but they may occasionally need support. Themis offers flexible ad hoc security services, making professional protection more accessible for smaller businesses. Services like these help create a safer environment for local retailers, restaurants, and offices throughout downtown Victoria.
Celebrating a 70-Year Legacy: The Dutch Bakery
Our member’s breakfast was hosted by one of Victoria’s most beloved businesses—The Dutch Bakery, which is celebrating an impressive 70 years of serving the community.
The Dutch Bakery is known for its:
- Traditional European pastries
- Breakfasts
- Artisan baked goods
- Locally made chocolates
- Seasonal treats such as Easter chocolate eggs and gift baskets
Family-owned businesses like The Dutch Bakery are a cornerstone of Victoria’s local business culture and culinary tradition.
