In this webinar session, Beverly Carter Notary Public describes the issues with Do It Yourself Will kits and the common errors people make. She will discuss the downside of DIY Wills and why having a Will done by a professional matter in British Columbia. She routinely quotes a lawyer who once told her “Lawyers love home-made Wills.” In her experience, when reviewing home-made Wills that clients bring to the office, she finds that four out of five Wills contain errors, most of those being grievance errors. Beverly will also talk about the unique features of BC’s Wills, Estates, and Succession Act, general planning and how to prepare for making a Will.
New to this session, Beverly Carter covers the Remote Signings of Wills under the announcement of BC’s two Ministerial Orders, M161 & M162, which allows Notaries and lawyers in British Columbia to witness the signing of Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, and Health Representation Agreements in the electronic presence of clients. Beverly will discuss the Emergency Program Act and how long these orders will last under BC’s State of Emergency. She will discuss what remote signing is and what it isn’t, as well who this option is best suited for, its limitations and practical aspects.
